Born and educated in Vienna, studies in Zoology, Botany and Geography at the University of Vienna, Ph. D. in 1969, postdoctoral position at UNC Chapel Hill 1969-1971, 1972 Assistant Professor at the University of Vienna, 1982 Habilitation, 1992 - 2007 Associate Professor. 1985 - 2004 Editor-in-Chief of the journal PSZN: Marine Ecology. Since 1997 corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
